Keep Dark: A book comprising of around 100 of Nicola Hicks’ drawings & sculptures.

For the past four decades, British artist Nicola Hicks’s practice has centred around a world of mythic, sculptural figures, exploring an anthropomorphic relationship to the animal world through portraits of humanized animals and beastlike humans. Her work has addressed the universal, and often darker aspects of humanity, described by art critic William Packer as characterized by “transformations, of gods and sacred monsters”, calling upon myths and fables as sources for her imagery, from the transfiguration of Zeus to Bottom in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Nicola Hicks: Keep Dark brings together around 100 images of Hicks’s sculptures and drawings from 1985 to the present day. The accompanying texts, written by the acclaimed authors and leading cultural figures David Mamet, Candia McWilliam, Max Porter, Matilda Pye, Will Self and Patterson Sims, explore subjects ranging from grief, love and understanding to war and money.
