Limited Edition T-shirt | Art By Emma Cousin
In 2018/19 Emma Cousin made a wall drawing of interlocking figures in an arpeggio structure responding to the word ‘Survey’ as part of an exhibition under this title commissioned by Jerwood Visual Arts. This year-long project involved traveling the UK to make a site-specific wall piece in each of the four gallery sites, painted directly onto the wall using improvisation upon the form of the arpeggio. Each wall painting was painted over at the end of each exhibition, returning the gallery to its normal state. Reflecting on this, Cousin realised this was wonderfully ‘ridiculous’. As a response, she has used drawings from the walls to create a limited edition printed t-shirt (edition of 100) to give the work a new life on the bodies of the public when they are themselves surveyed.
Funds raised will go towards an emergency appeal for £150k, to provide the funds for the emergency hotel rooms, B&B’s, help to travel to safely, emergency packs with essential items including feminine hygiene products, nappies and baby milk, a change of clothes and food parcels. The week prior to lockdown the number of calls Solace’s Advice Line received surged by 49% and the week following dropped by a dramatic 42%. Solace are really in the frontline of working with the Police and other agencies, to try and respond to this crisis, but keeping women safe has become immeasurably harder during this time. They are not only combating violence, but hunger and destitution and trying to protect women from the dangers of the virus without a safe place to self-isolate.
