Anika Roach is a painter living and working in London. In her work she seeks to broaden existing narratives surrounding the painting of Black bodies, as part of a new wave of contemporary figurative painters challenging the shortage of Black figures in western art history. “Through humour and moments of absurdity, I hope not to diminish the necessary conversations attached to how we are represented,” she says, “but to offer alternative narratives and rhythms for these discourses.”
